Miniatures for use with After\\Burner

Space Goose Inspired Fighter

A collection of resources for your games today, pilots!

While all of my own playtest games have been via Virtual Tabletop, I built After\\Burner with my own collection of starfighter miniatures in mind. I wanted the game to be a nice excuse to toss all of your best zoomies onto their little flight stands and get them sparring across the battle grid together.  That said, the game has an inherent need for a lot of variety in figures (6 different models for player ships to begin with) which necessitates having a lot of options on hand.

While I've been content to make use of a modest collect of X-Wing Miniatures Game figures, I'd considered that if there were ever an opportunity to run the game at a convention, (a long shot, but you never know!) I'd want to use more obscure or un-branded ship designs. I got a question in this regard and wanted to share some resources for those who are hunting for physical miniatures for use with the game. Below are links along with notes:

FOR THE 3D PRINTING CROWD:
  • I've assembled a curated collection on Thingiverse that I'll be adding to as I find new options. I'll try to keep this to unique ships, more obscure selections from known franchises, or vessels from lesser-known IPs. If you need an X-Wing or a Viper, those won't be hard to find. Should you find (or create!) some killer starfighters that belong in the collection, let me know and I'll add them! I haven't printed nearly all of these myself, and so there are bound to be scale mismatches or some that simply need to be printed in resin rather than FDM, so approach with caution.
SHIPS TO SHIP:
  • The easiest and on the cheaper end, are these two cheapie sets of children's party-favor starships available from the Evil Empire itself. The first set is wildly cheap for 70+ ships and I would say half of them look....okay? The second set is a *lot* of shipswith kind of messy greebling but otherwise decent design and solid silhouettes. The flying saucers are maybe not my preferred fit but your mileage may vary!
  • Ad Astra Games has their own line of really innovative starfighter/fleet battle games and variants that are 100% worth your time; but of note in this case is theirline of miniatures. Not everything available are starfighters specifically but you'll find great designs and variety there.
  • The aerial assets for Strato Minis' Hardwar look really great. They're on the pricier end, but damn do they look nice. They're described as running in 6mm scale (the Battletech standard) .
  • Little Metal Ships has a great range with wide variety, and seems to run at about X-Wing Miniatures' scale.
  • I think the Star Crush range is maybe not as wide as it once was, and again at the pricier end, but their Xothic Wing Fighter is a pitch-perfect Shrieker.
  • Not specifically starfighters, but this is a fairly inexpensive set of 13 ships that can work - even if they are better for fleet games like A Billion Suns.

I'll keep this Dev Log post updated if I find some more good sources for miniatures. Hopefully something here made your search a bit easier or rounded out your squadron! If not...there's always kitbashing (digitally or physically).

In any event, and until next time, good hunting, pilots.
